When Is the Right Time to Buy Life Insurance?
People tend to put off buying life insurance because there's no obvious deadline forcing the decision. Unlike a car insurance requirement or a mortgage closing date, nothing formally tells you it's time. That's exactly why so many people wait longer than they should.
Earlier Is Generally Better
Rates are largely driven by age and health at the time you apply. The younger and healthier you are when you lock in a policy, the more favorably you tend to be priced, and that pricing typically stays fixed for the life of a term policy. Waiting doesn't just delay protection — it usually means paying more once you do apply, since age and any new health issues work against you the longer you wait.
The Real Triggers Are Life Events, Not Ages
Rather than picking an arbitrary age, it helps to think about the moments that actually create financial dependents or obligations:
- Getting married — your finances start merging, and a spouse may come to rely on your income.
- Buying a home — a mortgage is a long-term obligation that would need to be covered if something happened to you.
- Having a child — this is one of the clearest triggers. A new dependent changes the financial picture immediately, and many people choose to have coverage in place before or shortly after a child arrives.
- Taking on new debt or financial responsibility for someone else — co-signing a loan, supporting an aging parent, or becoming the primary earner in your household.
Waiting for "The Right Moment" Often Means Waiting Too Long
It's easy to tell yourself you'll get coverage once you're more established, once you have kids, once the mortgage is signed. The problem is that health can change unexpectedly at any point, and once it does, obtaining affordable coverage becomes harder. Buying before you strictly need it, while you're healthy, is usually the better financial move even if the need feels less urgent in the moment.
It's Rarely Too Late to Start, Either
If none of those triggers applied to you years ago and you're only now considering coverage, that's still worth doing. The best time to buy was years ago; the second-best time is now, before whatever the next life change turns out to be.
