Life Insurance Checklist After a Major Life Change

Life insurance isn't a set-it-and-forget-it purchase. A policy that made sense five years ago may not reflect your life today. Major life changes are the natural checkpoints to pull out your policy and make sure it still fits.

After Getting Married

Your financial picture merges with your spouse's, often including shared debt, shared housing costs, and a household budget that now depends on both incomes. This is a good moment to review coverage amounts together and update beneficiary designations to reflect your spouse.

After Having a Child

A new dependent is one of the clearest reasons to revisit coverage. Consider whether your current amount would be enough to support your child through the years that matter most, from early childhood through eventual independence, and whether both parents have adequate coverage — not just the primary earner.

After Buying a Home

A mortgage is a long-term financial obligation, often the largest one a family carries. If something happened to you, would your family be able to manage that payment, or would they risk losing the home? Reviewing your coverage against your mortgage balance is a useful gut check.

After a Divorce

Divorce almost always requires an update to beneficiary designations, and possibly a full reassessment of how much coverage you need and who depends on it now. It's easy to overlook an old policy in the paperwork of a divorce, but an outdated beneficiary listing can undo your intentions entirely.

After a Major Income Change

A promotion, a new job, starting a business, or even losing a job all shift what your family would need to replace if your income stopped. Coverage that made sense at a lower income might now leave a gap, or coverage bought during a higher-earning period might be more than you currently need.

After a Loss

If you've lost a spouse, a co-signer, or another person who was factored into your original coverage decision, it's worth revisiting both your coverage amount and your beneficiary designations to reflect your current circumstances.

Make It a Habit, Not Just a Reaction

Beyond specific life events, it's worth taking a few minutes every couple of years to check that your policy still matches your life. Circumstances shift gradually too, not just through major events, and a periodic check catches gaps that might otherwise go unnoticed.
